My new motorglider is a DG-505MB, which bases Nagano gliderport near to the city where the Olympic Winter Games was held in 1998.
The area is situated in central Japan and, in my opinion, is the best for soaring flight in the island. I started flying my DG-505MB from January 2003 on.
So far, I have added 40 more flying hours in the new motorglider to my logbook, mainly on weekends. These flights include two 300K+ and several ones with mountain waves.
We usually start climbing using a slope lift generated nearby hills with the engine running, to 3000-4000ft, then retract the powerplant.
April and May are the top period in Nagano area with thermals to go up beyond 10,000ft, plus mountain waves generated by the Japan Alps ranges will exceed 20,000ft levels.
To fly cross-country along these 10,000ft class mountains is a very dynamic experience, and can be comparable to those take place in the European Alps.
I hope to take many of my soaring friends with me, to explore the world of mountain soaring flight, in my DG-505MB.
Happy landings
Yasuo Bamba
